Roxanne Pallett gives first interview post-Celebrity Big Brother: ‘This is my reality now’
Roxanne Pallett has spoken on Jeremy Vine’s new Channel 5 show about her explosive stint on Celebrity Big Brother.
The former Emmerdale star accused Ryan Thomas of violently punching her in the ribs, when video footage showed him gently playfighting. 11,000 Ofcom complaints and a huge public backlash followed.
Roxanne walked out of the house on Friday night, and appeared on Vine’s new-look Channel 5 show this morning – where she apologised for her “over-reaction”, highlighted her past experience with domestic violence, addressed her former co-stars’ criticisms of her, and acknowledged the significance of her actions in relation to the #MeToo movement.
She said: “At the time it hurt. But when I looked back on the footage, I looked back on that clip and… I got it wrong. I really got it wrong.
“After it happened, I just felt like.. I don’t know to explain it.. my mind ran away with me. I am a sensitive person, only my family and friends can vouch for that.
“Everything in that house becomes so heightened – a look a comment an action – your insecurities are heightened, your sensitivity and all I can say, the only thing I can explain it with is in the moment it felt worse than it was. I can’t show you the feeling.”
She added: “It was the word ‘deliberately’ that I regret. I massively apologise not just to Ryan, but to his family and friends and fans… to everyone that justifiably saw an overreaction to what wasn’t a malicious act.
“Because I am sensitive and I was emotional… he did apologise and he did say his ring caught me [but] it was the word ‘deliberate’ that I regret. There was no malicious intention in that and that’s what apologise for, because I shouldn’t have questioned his motivation. I got it wrong.”
On her own history with domestic abuse – something alluded to by Women‘s Aid’s statement over the weekend – she said: “I have been a victim of domestic violence… perhaps Women’s Aid were right that my reaction was a telltale sign that I have been in a situation like that.
“In my life I have become conditioned, I am oversensitive to certain things because of things like that. I am devastated that even one person feels I’ve discredited or undermined abuse because that was not my intention.”
"I massively apologise to not just Ryan but to his family, his friends, his fans, every single person that watched that…"

When Vine highlighted how many people thought she was only doing the interview to salvage her career, she responded: “I chose to be here today, I was advised not to be. I’m not getting paid, I wasn’t told to do this interview.
“This is the hardest thing I’ve had to do, come here today. [The incident has] affected my family, my friends, people that have detached themselves from me. This is my reality now. I’m here to acknowledge a mistake.”
At the end of the segment she was asked about the huge volumes of former co-stars from Emmerdale and various theatrical productions who have spoken out against her.
“I think we all make friends and enemies along the way in life and in jobs and when you make mistakes, there’s a lot of people that wanna contribute to the backlash,” she said.
Pallett will next face Emma Willis on Celebrity Big Brother tonight on Channel 5.
