Celebrity Big Brother 2018: Roxanne Pallett defended by domestic violence charity
A domestic violence charity has spoken out in support of Roxanne Pallett after this week’s nastiness on Celebrity Big Brother.
The former Emmerdale star has received widespread criticism after claiming to be badly hurt and terrified following an incident with Ryan Thomas, in which he appears to be gently playfighting with her.
Ryan was given a formal warning by bosses but 11,000 fans have complained to Ofcom, mostly in his favour.
But the head of Women’s Aid has told the Daily Mirror: “Play fighting may not seem serious but if you have been in an abusive relationship it can seem frightening and even trigger memories of the abuse.
“Domestic abuse means you don’t feel safe in your home environment, and as a woman who has previously spoken about being in a violent and abusive relationship, Roxanne clearly did not feel comfortable going to sleep in the same room as someone who had physically hurt her, even if that was not his intention.”
She added: “An estimated 1.2 million women experienced domestic abuse last year alone; while you might not think you know someone who has experienced domestic abuse, it is highly likely that you do.
“That’s why it is so important for us to show understanding and empathy for someone who is clearly upset by certain behaviours rather than blaming them for overreacting. For any survivors out there, you are not alone. Women’s Aid is always here to listen to you, believe you and support you.”
A rep for Roxanne had previously alluded to her past experience with DV.
“Roxanne has no contact with the outside world to make her own statement; however, we do know that Roxanne has worked closely with various domestic violence charities due to being a victim of domestic violence herself,” they said.
“She would be very upset to find out she may have caused offence to others who have been through the same.”
Many of her former co-stars have spoken out against her, including Danny Miller – who posted on Twitter: “Roxanne’s a known, compulsive liar. Ryan wouldn’t harm a fly. Horrible, attention seeking little liar. Goes from being upset & in pain to dancing & drinking.
“To going bed, crying she can’t sleep in the same room as Ryan, to worrying about being nominated? You be the judge #CBB.”
Brooke Vincent of Coronation Street raged: “@ryanjamesthomas Is like a brother to me and to see someone try and manipulate a situation towards him is so cruel, unnecessary and dangerous on so many levels! TEAM RYAN ALWAYS.
“And if anybody should go it should be her! Actions have consequences! It’s about time she faced some of hers! TEAM RYAN.”
It’s all got very ugly, very quickly and it’s absolutely for the best that she’s out.
Ryan, meanwhile, has now become the bookies’ favourite to win.
