Taylor Swift has debuted her video for Look What You Made Me Do at the MTV VMAs, and it’s quite something.
There is barely one single reason why people dislike her that she doesn’t pick up on in the clip, and it makes for a pretty entertaining watch: the “squad”! The I Heart TS t-shirts! The “excluded from this narrative” bollocks! IT’S ALL HERE!
Either she’s being really self-aware (a la Blank Space) or she’s having a total meltdown – whatever the case, it’s a great video.
This is one part, however, that’s raised a few eyebrows online. That scene of her lying in a bath of jewels is a bit buttock-clenchy given the circumstances of Kim Kardashian West’s robbery ordeal, isn’t it? Especially given the gun-gesture?
Of course, it is probably (/hopefully) the case that neither Swift nor director Joseph Khan intended for the similarity to be there, and meant for that particular moment to be a self-aware reference to Taylor’s own perceived “rich white girl” status (and the gun gesture just fits the lyric of the verse). But they must have known how many people would assume the song itself refers to Kim and Kanye – so did they not think that people would make that connection here…?
Anyway. The video is below:
